‘Octomum’ Nadya Suleman shares rare school photo of children, now 13
Nadya Suleman’s eight youngest children are now teenagers, which makes those of us who remember their birth feel very old.
The 47-year-old, better known as ‘Octomum’, made headlines around the world in 2009 when she gave birth to octuplets after IVF treatment.
While the kids have grown up mostly out of the spotlight, the mum – who now goes by the name Natalie – gave fans a rare glimpse into their life when she shared a new “first day of school” photo.
In the heartwarming snap, Natalie described her youngest as “outstanding role models”.
“Be proud of yourselves, children, for you are kind, respectful and helpful to all your fellow students, teachers and staff. … I love you,” she wrote.
The doting mum, who also has six older children, then added a ‘side note to critics’ who regularly ask about them.
“Their older siblings didn’t want me posting a photo on the first day,” she said.
“I respect their choice, so do you.”
The new school photo comes seven months after Noah, Maliyah, Isaiah, Nariyah, Jonah, Makai, Josiah and Jeremiah turned 13.
“You are all becoming some of the kindest, humblest, grateful and loving human beings I have ever known,” Natalie captioned a post on their January birthday.
“Each of you has rare and unique characteristics, unlike any other child your age, especially in our society today.”
The former porn star added that her teenagers love serving “the less fortunate”, concluding, “I don’t know what I could have done to deserve to be blessed so abundantly.”
Natalie was already mum to Ameerah, Calyssa, Elijah, Jonah, Joshua and Aidan when she became pregnant with the octuplets in 2008. In total, she has 14 children.
Her unusual pregnancy has made her a household name – but in recent years Natalie has revealed she ‘never wanted to attract attention’.
“I was pretending to be a fake, a caricature, which I am not, and I was doing it out of desperation and lack to be able to provide for my family,” she said. The New York Times in December 2018.
“I’ve been hiding from the real world all my life.”
She addressed the subject in an Instagram post in January 2020, saying she wanted to use the pain of the past decade to help her and her family achieve their dreams.
“First of all, I would like to focus on you, kind supporters, who have followed my family since day one, almost 11 years ago,” she wrote at the time.
“2020 marks the seventh year since I escaped the fake life I was leading; continue, build a better life for my family.
“I have made the decision to reject all tabloid-type media requests (despite the lucrative offer) as my goal is to move forward and publish my full true story.
“Refrain from judging me solely on the basis of the season (struggling to survive) in which you found yourself.
“Despite the pain of my past, I have chosen to use my struggles as stepping stones, furthering my pursuit of achieving the goals I have set for my family.”
In order to make ends meet, the 14-year-old mum took on various jobs, including a stint as a porn star which she later described as “senseless, immature and selfish”.
“Every day I woke up with the ugliest, deadliest, most visceral feeling inside of me,” she told the Daily Mail in 2017.
“I didn’t want to live. I felt less human than this character I pretended to be, in order to survive and provide for my family.
