Google search fails to turn off dark mode issue that bothers some users

Google Search is the company’s main service. It’s the most search engine used worldwide with a great advantage over its main competitors. It is also available on most platforms and systems.

However, over the past few weeks, some users of the service have been facing issues with setting up dark mode. Apparently the feature is not working properly for them, as it cannot be disabled.

Google Search users can’t turn off dark mode

According to several reports, some Google Search app users cannot turn off dark mode. Thus, the interface remains permanently with the dark color scheme (1, 2).

I can’t turn off dark mode on the Google app!

So I opened the Google app on my phone today, Android 9, and it was in dark mode. The problem is that dark mode is almost impossible to read for me. I looked for how to turn it off and nothing seems to work. I tried the app settings, but couldn’t find anything. Dark mode is disabled on the rest of the system, so that’s not it. Any help would be (greatly) appreciated.

Also, for some, dark mode is set automatically without the user having made any changes to the settings. Then, when it happens, affected users cannot turn it off.

Most of the reports come from users of Android devices. However, some reports indicate that some Mac device users might also suffer from the problem.

I’m currently on macOS with my system on a dark theme. However, I don’t want my google search page to be in a dark theme because I have trouble reading.

When searching on Chrome in incognito mode, Google search keeps returning to “Dark theme”. Go to the cog icon in the top right and set “Dark Theme: Off” to work for a while before switching back to dark theme on Google Search.

Searching for visually similar images does not work properly

There is another reported bug in the Google Search app, related to reverse image search. Reverse search is a feature that finds images on Google using another image as a base.

When uploading an image to Google, the service also offers the possibility of obtaining “visually similar images”. However, it does not work properly for some users.

Visually similar images do not load.

Usually when I do a reverse image search and click on a result under Visually Similar Images, I’m taken to a Google Images page showing that result and others. Recently, I am simply redirected to the Google Images homepage. I tried logging out and using another browser.

Issue escalated to Google team

A Google product expert has confirmed that the issue with finding visually similar images has been escalated. So, for now, we just have to wait for updates on the matter.

However, there is still no official statement regarding the dark mode issue that does not allow turning it off in the Google Search app.

Finally, if new developments on these issues emerge in the coming days, we will update this article with relevant information to keep you informed.
